Laser engraving

Laser engraving is the practice of using a laser cutter (see also: laser cutter) to engrave an object.

The technique does not involve the use of inks, nor does it involve tool bits which contact the engraving surface and wear out. These properties distinguish laser engraving from alternative engraving or marking technologies where inks or bit heads have to be replaced regularly.

	Low footprint No additional materials are used. However because it is not protective, an additional finishing layer could be needed.
			Tips Fumes from laser engraving are safer if the material is untreated wood, but can be a hazard to health if the material is MDF, particle board (especially with synthetic lamination) or painted or lacquered wood. If you work with these materials you have to make sure there is a proper aspiration system in place.
		High investment Laser cutting machines are expensive, and small-size ones are usually not fit for engraving.

	Non toxic Engraving does not have toxicity issues, if you avoid protecting with unsafe finishes. Long lifespan The treatment is durable, as it takes off part of the material permanently.
